Born Real is the founder of the Bornreal movement, an artist, and a dedicated community organizer. His work sits at the intersection of creativity and social impact. We spoke with him about using influence for something greater than personal gain.
Runwae: Tell us about Bornreal. What is the mission?
Born Real: Bornreal started as a simple idea: be authentic in everything you do. The name comes from that. We are born real. Society teaches us to put on masks, to perform, to be something we are not. Bornreal is about reclaiming that original authenticity and using it to make a difference in our communities.
Art as Activism
Runwae: How do you balance your artistic work with community organizing?
Born Real: I do not see them as separate things. My art is my organizing, and my organizing is my art. When I create a mural in a neighborhood, that is organizing. It brings people together, sparks conversations, gives the community something to be proud of. When I organize a cleanup or a youth event, the creativity I bring to that work makes it more engaging. One feeds the other.
Runwae: What role does social media play in your work?
Born Real: Social media is a tool. Like any tool, it can be used for good or for nothing meaningful at all. I use it to amplify voices that do not get heard, to document the work we are doing on the ground, and to connect with people who share our values. But I never confuse online activity with real world impact. The goal is always to move from the screen to the street.
Influence with Purpose
Runwae: How do you think about your influence and the responsibility that comes with it?
Born Real: Influence is a form of power, and power comes with responsibility. Every time I post something, I am aware that it reaches people who trust my perspective. That is not something I take lightly. I ask myself whether what I am sharing adds value, whether it moves the culture in a positive direction, whether it helps someone.
"Real influence is not about how many people follow you. It is about how many people you can move to action. Numbers mean nothing if they do not translate to impact."
Born Real Artist & Community Organizer
Runwae: What is your approach to working with brands?
Born Real: Any brand that wants to work with me has to understand that I am not for sale in the traditional sense. I will not promote something just because there is money involved. But if a brand genuinely wants to invest in communities, if they are willing to show up in real ways beyond just writing a check, then we can talk. The best partnerships I have had are with brands that let me lead on the community side while they provide resources.
Building for the Future
Runwae: What is next for Bornreal?
Born Real: We are expanding our youth programs. The next generation has so much potential, but they need guidance and opportunities. We are creating spaces where young people can develop their creative skills while also learning about leadership and community building. If we can help even a handful of them become the next generation of positive influences, then everything we have done will be worth it.
Final Thoughts
Born Real represents a different model of influence, one where the measure of success is not followers or engagement rates but tangible community impact. His approach offers valuable lessons for brands looking to move beyond surface level partnerships into genuine community investment. For aspiring influencers, his story is a reminder that the most meaningful platforms are built on purpose, not just personality.
